The effort done by the European air-transport community to promote the clean air technologies has been captured in the initiative “Clean Sky”-JTI.
 
One of the six technological domains included in this initiative is the SAGE (Sustainable and Green Engine) concept which is intimately related to the noise, CO2 and NOx reduction and fuel burn optimization, being this fact even more important due to their civilian and military use in the urban airspace (traffic monitoring, touristic trips, first responder helicopters, police surveillance…). The SAGE is structured into 5 Integrated Technology Demonstrators (ITD) in which SAGE5 refers to a new Turboshaft concept for a new green and silence family of helicopter.
 
Fuel conversion efficiency is a key point for reducing emissions of toxic gases (NOx and CO2) of air vehicles, which together with the economical aspect associated with fuel costs, requires special attention by the Clean Sky R&D Activities. Two different approximations to achieve this has been proposed: Helicopter weight reduction and turboshaft redesign.
 
Nevertheless, turboshaft noise and toxic gas emission reduction require monitoring technologies for fuel consumption and power transmission optimization. This is expected to be achieved by accurately measuring pressure, position and temperature. Several emerging or critical technologies developed for the automotive, robotic, space or defence sectors may be considered for evaluation as potential candidates for engine module monitoring outside the combustion chamber.

 ActiPPTSens consortium will establish the technology benchmark on smart sensors for pressure, position and temperature measurement,. These sensor Technologies and their main features will be analyzed and used to define a Sensors Technology Comparative Matrix. The most promising sensors technology will be chosen for the prototype development.
  
ActiPPTSens consortium will develop a demonstrator in the field of new sensor technologies for pressure, position and temperature with the main aim of providing improved technologies for safety, reliability and reduced environment impact of air-engines.
